Coach: Tom Amstutz (6th year at Toledo)
Team Name: Rockets
2005 Overall Record: 8-3
2005 MAC Record 6-2
Returning Starters: 15
Last year, this team went 8- 3 and easily beat UTEP 45- 13 in the GMAC Bowl. Although they’ll be breaking in a relatively new quarterback, sophomore Clint Cochran (32 COMP, 42 ATT, 262 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT), the Rockies still feature a well-honed offense and one of the best defenses in the conference.
The team’s spread offense is lead by senior WR Steve Odom (55 REC, 690 YDS, 6 TDs) and has a host of solid deep men. On the rushing front, the Rockies are deep, with junior Jalen Parmele (64 CARR, 294 YDS, 3 TDs), sophomore Richard Davis and freshman DaJuane Collins sharing the ball.
Just about the entire offensive line is back, being led by junior John Greco at left tackle. Last season they allowed only 13 sacks. They will make the offense tough to beat.
The 3 – 4 defense returns all three upfront men and both OLB, including senior Mike Alston (9.5 sacks). Last season, Toledo’s 31 sacks tied for league best. Two new starters man the ILB positions, while the secondary includes junior Tyrrell Herbert (95 tackles).
The Rockies could certainly end up in another bowl and may even go 12 and 0. Toss up games include the opener at Iowa State and games with Kansas, Pittsburgh and MAC power Northern Illinois.
