Coach: Mike Leach (7th year at Texas Tech)
Team Name: Red Raiders
2005 Overall Record: 9-2
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 6-2
Returning Starters: 13
Sophomore QB Graham Harrell will carry on the Texas Tech tradition when he becomes the fifth starting quarterback that the Raiders have fielded in 5 years. But the team is not concerned, it seems as though whoever plays that position for a year excels. You see, each of those seasons the club led the nation in pass offense.
At running back, Shannon Woods and Taurance Rawls will attempt
to make up for the void created by the departure of versatile
scoring machine Taurean Henderson. Helping them will be a fine
offensive line that has all but one starter returning.
Tech scored an average of 39.4 PPG in 2005, while giving up only
18.8 PPG. Last season, they were ranked fifteenth nationally on
pass defense. But the secondary is depleted and may struggle this
year.
On the line, Seth Nitschmann and Dek Bake will be welcomed back after season-ending injuries sidelined them in 2005. Keyunta Dawson, an immense playmaker, moves from rush end to outside linebacker this season. If the transition works, the linebacking corps could be dominant.
Important conference games against Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Oklahoma will define this team and their season. Taking it to those clubs could put Texas Tech in a prominent bowl game.
