Coach: Dennis Franchione (4th year at Texas A&M)
Team Name: Aggies
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 3-6
Returning Starters: 13
Good offense hampered by a bad defense was the story for the Aggies last season. Texas A&M ranked seventh nationally when they had the ball and one hundred seventh nationally on the other side of the pigskin. The team’s third down defense ranked one hundred thirteenth in 2005.
Once again, the offense looks dynamic with Stephen McGee getting the start at QB for the first time. McGee can run, throw and command the field. His primary receivers all return healthy after being knocked out last season by injuries. In the backfield, there’s a lot to choose from— returning players Courtney Lewis, Jorvorskie Lane and newcomer Mike Goodson—will provide solid yardage. The offensive line has improved with a strong core of players coming back.
The Aggies had a difficult time putting pressure on the passer in 2005 and that led to a breakdown in the secondary. Decimated by injuries last year, A&M’s line looks rejuvenated and should perform better in 2006. Senior linebacker Justin Warren (95 tackles) will be a tough force for opponents to neutralize. The secondary returns with some experienced players and hopefully will play better.
The Longhorns will be near impossible to beat, but the Aggies could find a bowl game if they defeat swing opponents Texas Tech and Nebraska. There’s the possibility of an upset over Oklahoma too. These conference games will be the key to the team’s season.
