Coach: Walt Harris (2nd year at Stanford)
Team Name: Cardinal
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 Pac 10 Conference Record 4-4
Returning Starters: 16

The Cardinals pass a lot, which is good and bad. They feature gifted QB Trent Edwards (62.7 COMP% in 2005), who this season will see some consistently open targets to hit in Evan Moore (returning after missing last year due to an injury) and Mark Bradford (37 REC, 609 YDS. 6 TDs).

But Stanford’s offensive line has been sieve-like, which has been tough on Edwards and the running game. Most of the OL starters are back, hopefully their poor play will not be.

In 2005 no Stanford runner gained more than a total of 250 yards. Athletic Anthony Kimble, who’s a converted receiver, returns to the backfield with experience and more confidence, while first-year player Toby Gehart will hit the field running.

The fine linebacking unit returns intact. With Michael Okwo and Mike Silva possessing talent-plus, this part of the defense will be sound. They’ll need to be since the front line is in a rebuilding year.

Three of the secondary’s starters are back, but they will need to show improvement, while whoever fills the now vacant second corner position will have their hands full.

This year’s contest against Notre Dame looks like an impossible match-up for the Cardinals, while games against Navy, Washington State, Washington, and Oregon State will determine if this club can win more than one game in 2006.
