Coach: Joe Tiller (10th year at Purdue)
Team Name: Boilermakers
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 Big 10 Conference Record 3-5
Returning Starters: 12
Purdue’s Curtis Painter, a sophomore, starts his first full season at QB. He can run the option and toss the deep one too. He may be a big factor in improving this team’s play.
He’ll be passing to Dorien Bryant (80 REC, 960 YDS, 4 TDs), the leading receiver in the Big 10 last season. Bryant heads a great group of sure-handed athletes. Running back will go to Kory Sheets, who gained 571 YDS and crossed the goal line 10 times in his initial season. Look for much more from him.
The line is absolutely solid and should provide great protection for Painter and gaping holes for the runners.
The Boilermakers offense scored an average of 30 PPG in 2005, while allowing 28.1 PPG. Their defense was ranked 100 out of 117. The “D” may not improve, with much of the defensive unit composed of sophomores and juniors who did not start in 2005.
This is an offense that will put points up, but Purdue also has a defense that will give up yards and points. Last season with a fairly weak schedule, the team went 6 -6. This year the schedule is even easier and with Painter running an improved offense, this team can go 8-5. Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State all in a row will figure into the final number of wins. Notre Dame and Iowa are just about sure loses.
