Coach: Mike Bellotti (12th year at Oregon)
Team Name: Ducks
2005 Overall Record: 10-1
2005 Pac 10 Conference Record 7-1
Returning Starters: 13

Last season the Ducks were one of the season’s big surprises. One reason was their newly fashioned spread offense that added close to 10 points and over 40 yards per game in offense from the year before.

Oregon lost their starting QB early in the season and split the duties between Dennis Dixon (66.3% COMP) and Brady Leaf (58.5% COMP). Both are back, experienced and both may see action at the helm this year.

The offensive line returns all five starters plus they add 2 junior college transfers, which means sophomore running back Jonathan Stewart, who possesses daunting power and speed, will have alleys that he can exploit. In the receiving area, Demetrius Williams will be missed but there’s certainly a wealth of unproven talent ready to take over.

On “D” the Ducks offer versatility and athleticism with A.J. Tuitele and Patrick Chung able to maintain control over various parts of the field. Big man Haloti Ngata is gone and his ability to manhandle 2 or 3 blockers at a time is just about impossible to replace. The team is also deficient at the corners, which could make things difficult in the pass saturated PAC-10.

Games against UCLA and Arizona State are winnable but will be tough. Beating USC in the Tojans’ house would be monumental. If they can handle a challenging early schedule, Oregon will be bowl bound.
