Coach: Bob Stoops (8th year at Oklahoma)
Team Name: Sooners
2005 Overall Record: 7-4
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 6-2
Returning Starters: 14
If anyone in the Big 12 is going to give Texas a run for their conference and national monies, it’s the Sooners. They may be the best team in the country, and they’re certainly one of the top ten.
This club can do it on the ground—RB Adrian Peterson (221 carries, 1,104 yards, 14 TDs) —and in the air—QB Rhett Romar (2,018 yards and 10 TDs). Romar, a freshman last year, was given the keys to the car in game two of 2005. He had some stops and starts (10 INTs) but by mid-season he was running on all cylinders. Vastly improved, he will give Oklahoma a fine aerial game and smart signal calling. His favorite target will be the talented and athletic sophomore Malcolm Kelly, who in his first season had 33 receptions for 471 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The defense, which was especially tough on the run last season, has some experience in the secondary with second-year man Reggie Smith starting. Senior Calvin Thibodeaux (10 sacks) will provide stability and power on the front line. WLB Rufus Alexander (102 tackles) will anchor a deep group of linebackers.
The key battle for this team will be on their home turf when the Longhorns visit in early October. If they can beat Texas, the Sooners could be undefeated this year.
