Coach: John Bunting (6th year at North Carolina)
Team Name: Tar Heels
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 ACC Conference Record 4-4
Returning Starters: 12
This is a team in search of an offense. They have a new quarterback and a new offensive coordinator in former Fresno State’s Frank Cignetti. He’ll be looking to make the team more physical and to throw the ball downfield more often.
The quarterback position will be held by either Nebraska transfer Joe Daily or freshman Cam Sexton. Daily possesses more experience and Sexton better passing ability. Senior running back Ronnie McGill (130 CARR, 530 YDS, 5 TDs) has the opportunity to open it up this season, especially on the left side where the line has experience.
The receiving corps lost four of their best players and will have to make up a lot of ground to be effective.
On “D,” there’s strength in the secondary, which will be led by strong safety Trimane Goddard (3 INTS). Larry Edwards (91 tackles) returns at SLB to lead a linebacking unit with experience but not much depth. The line is worrisome, although there’s some experience and ability.
A new offense will ignite this team as long as the receivers do their job and some solid play on defense will certainly help. The Tar Heels have a tough schedule that includes out-of-conference games against an exceptional Notre Dame team and a tough Rutgers squad. Still, North Carolina could end up with 8 wins and a bowl game.
