Coach: Chuck Amato (7th year at NC State)
Team Name: Wolfpack
2005 Overall Record: 7-5
2005 ACC Conference Record 3-5
Returning Starters: 10
The offense for the Wolfpack will come primarily from the tailback position. As a freshman, Andre Brown carried the ball 129 times, gaining 667 yards and scoring 6 TDs. Tony Baker, also in his first year, added 536 yards. They’ll both be getting the ball a lot this season.
Quarterback Marcus Stone is serviceable but not a big play threat. Last year in 6 games he went 5 and 1, passing for 1,015 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also threw 6 interceptions. For Stone, there’s good news in that the Wolfpack has a talented receiving unit and a tough front line.
NC State has a fine “D,” which was ranked eighth in the nation. The secondary looks very strong with rover Garland Heath (5 INTs), leading coverage. The linebacking unit needs rebuilding and both defensive ends are questionable. On the other hand, the tackles are solid.
This team always seems to be full of surprises, often performing
extraordinary feats against some of the finest teams in their
conference. Last season they upset Florida State, went 6 –
5 and then defeated South Florida in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
This season they’ll play 12 games with a key contest against
Virginia. Other tossups include Southern Miss, Maryland and
North Carolina—all on the road. If all falls into place,
including an upset against Georgia tech, 7 and 5 is not out
of the question.
