Coach: Paul Johnson (5th year at Navy)
Team Name: Midshipmen
2005 Overall Record: 7-4
Returning Starters: 16
The Midshipmen have been on a roll, winning 18 games in the past 2 seasons. This is the third year they’re asking a senior to be a first-time starting quarterback. The past two years, it’s worked just fine, with Lamar Owens racking up 2,179 yards and passing for 17 touchdowns in 2005.
This year, QB Brian Hampton (6 COMP, 19 ATT, 99 YDS, 1 TDs, 2 INTS) will have to run the triple-option offense. In the backfield, junior Reggie Campbell and sophomore Karlos Whittaker will start at the slotback positions and junior Adam Ballard gets the foothold at fullback.
Most of last season’s offensive line that helped Navy lead the nation in rushing with 318.7 yards per game while limiting defenses to 1.5 sacks per game is back.
The front defensive line is small with noise guard Larry Cylc being the only returning lineman. Of the four linebackers, three are seniors and returning starters. ILB Tyler Tidwell led the Midshipmen in sacks (10) and ILB Rob Caldwell led them in tackles (140). The corners and free safety all return, having been vastly improved from two years ago.
The Midshipmen can best last season’s 7-4 mark and play in another bowl game. This season Stanford, Tulsa and Rutgers will be tough tests and Notre Dame will be near impossible to beat.
