Coach: Gary Pinkel (6th year at Missouri)
Team Name: Tigers
2005 Overall Record: 6-5
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 4-4
Returning Starters: 15
The offense looks solid with sophomore quarterback Chas Daniel, who saw some impromptu action last season and impressed coaches and fans, ready to go. Can he be another standout like the guy he’s replacing-- Brad Smith, who broke 69 school, Big 12 and NCAA records?
Maybe not, but the Tigers look deep at running back and also feature two of the best tight ends in the nation—junior Martin Rucker and sophomore Chase Coffman. Together they had an astounding 94 reception in 2005! Most of the offensive line, a strength, returns.
The defense looks solid upfront with six starters returning, including defensive end Brian Smith (9 sacks). Free safety David Overstreet (100 tackles, 2 INTs) is the only guy in the secondary with experience as a starter. The rest are untested with Darnell Terrell and Domonique Johnson, both starting at the corners, possessing playmaking talent.
There’s very little depth in the secondary. Look for Missouri to be tough on the run and perhaps porous on the pass. One thing is for sure opponents will test them deep.
Missouri has key games against Colorado, Iowa State and Kansas. Last season they were 7 and 5 and went to the Independence Bowl where they beat South Carolina. This year they could go 5 and 7 and stay home for the post season.
