Coach: Sylvester Croom (3rd year at Mississippi State)
Team Name: Bulldogs
2005 Overall Record: 3-8
2005 SEC Conference Record 1-7
Returning Starters: 16
The Bulldogs are looking to score more points this season than their 13.9 PPG, which ranked them 113th nationally. QB Michael Henig is the key to opening up the field with the team’s West Coast offense.
He’ll have some receiving talent, including Tony Burks and former QB/converted receiver Omarr Conner. The club should also field a good ground game even though standout Jerious Norwood is gone. The Bulldogs will feature various ball carriers, including Brandon Thorton, Bryson Davis, Derek Ambrose and Brandon Hart.
More than half of the OL is new but they have both talent and depth.
The defense, led by tackle Deljuan Robinson, played well last season. Most of the frontline is back and all of the starting linebackers have also returned. Middle linebacker Quinton Culberson is prime in this area but he needs more support on the left and the right.
Free safety standout Jeramie Johnson (4 INTs) and corner David Heard should provide sound leadership and direction in the secondary.
Henig can play great ball and then become inconsistent. For this team to win, he needs to become more reliable, especially when it comes to decision-making. For Mississippi State to improve, they have to start with a bang and no bigger bang would be beating South Carolina in their home opener. Going from 3 and 8 to 6 and 5 is not impossible. Contests that could sway the win-loss margin are Kentucky and Ole’ Miss.
