Coach: Ralph Friedgen (6th year at Maryland)
Team Name: Terrapins
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 ACC Conference Record 3-5
Returning Starters: 13
The Terrapins lost too many fumbles, blew too many opportunities in the red zone and threw too many interceptions last season. Sam Hollenback (192 COMP, 315 ATT, 2,539 YDS, 13 TDs) showed that he could play, but he also revealed an inability to make good decisions (5 fumbles, 15 INTs). After a year at the helm and hopefully good health (he played injured in 2005), Maryland is looking for improvement.
Lance Ball, a tough, durable runner, rushed for 903 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2005. This season, the talented Josh Allen, who missed all of last year due to injury, will join him. The receiving corps is severely thinned out, while the offensive line could be a plus.
Last season, the defensive was fairly solid and six starters are back. Half of the secondary returns and the new starters all have experience. This team should again be strong in defending the pass.
The linebacking unit has some good backup but will have to deal with the loss of All-American D’Qwell Jackson. On the front end, senior Conrad Bolton can stop a train and Jeremy Navarre, in his second season, could become a dominant pass rusher.
Maryland has been in a downward trend, winning 5 and losing 6
each of the last two years. There’s talent here but also
massive holes that need to be plugged. This year could certainly
be a repeat of the last two.
