Coach: Mark Mangino (5th year at Kansas)
Team Name: Jayhawks
2005 Overall Record: 6-5
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 3-5
Returning Starters: 10
Kansas went to the Forth Worth Bowl last year, beating Houston 42-13. They have a chance to be bowl bound again this season. If they manage to go to a bowl game two seasons in a row, something they’ve never before, freshman QB Kerry Meier will have to lead them there. Meire is NFL big, athletic, accurate and strong. Can all of that make up for inexperience?
At TB, Joe Cornish (134 carries, 780 yards, 9 TDs) may be the Jayhawks’ first 1,000-yard rusher in a decade. He may need to have a career year, considering the lack or experience the team has at receiver. There’s excellent news for the running game in that much of the offensive line is back.
On defense, the Jayhawks were third in the country at stopping the run. Although most of the starters are gone, Kansas has the next class primed and ready to go. If the team is missing anything on “D,” it’s in the secondary, which has little experience and depth.
There’s good news on the schedule. The Jayhawks do not have to play Texas, Oklahoma or Texas Tech. Baylor, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State round out their season. This team should win at least 6. Toledo, Colorado, Iowa State, Missouri and Texas A&M can all go either way. They could win 11, four more than in 2005.
