Coach: Dan McCarney (12th year at Iowa State)
Team Name: Cyclones
2005 Overall Record: 7-4
2005 Big 12 Conference Record 4-4
Returning Starters: 14
The Cyclones look good on offense with junior QB Brett Meyer (19 TDs, 10 INTs) sending passes again to the elusive Todd Blythe (51 REC, 9 TDs) and the dependable Austin Flynn (56 REC, 4 TDs). At tailback, Stevie Hicks, who played injured last season, is healthy and hopes to at least match his 2004 total of 1,062 yards. TEs Ben Barkema and Aaron Nickel, who last season totaled 38 receptions, are ready to go.
Much of the offensive line is also back. They are a seasoned group that needs to show improvement in protecting Meyer, who was sacked a conference leading 39 times in 2005.
If the good news is the offense, the bad news is the Cyclones “D,” which lost most of its middle and deep men. Cornerback DeAndre Jackson, who notched 5 interceptions, is wily and fast and the only returning starter in the secondary. Defensive tackle Brent Curvey (61 Tackles, 6.5 Sacks) will now lead a relatively inexperienced front line. Along with a loss of starters, the backups on defense are mainly freshmen.
Iowa State has a tough road schedule that includes Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa and Colorado. Games against Toledo, Kansas and Missouri can all go either way. In the end, this team could be 8 and 4 or 3 and 9. Their first game against Toledo should tell you a lot about this club.
