Coach: Kirk Ferentz (8th year at Iowa)
Team Name: Hawkeyes
2005 Overall Record: 7-5
2005 Big 10 Conference Record 5-3
Returning Starters: 14
Last season, due to novice mistakes, Iowa lost five games. This year, with senior quarterback Drew Tate (219 COMP, 352 ATT, 2,828 YDS, 22 TDs, 7 INTS) once again at the helm and a defense with loads more experience and smarts, this team could go 11 and 1.
Along with touting one of the best passers in the game, the Hawkeyes feature one of the finest running backs in the person of Albert Young (249 CARR, 1,334 YDS, 8 TDS). On the receiving end, Iowa lost some of their key players, including Ed Hinkel and Clinton Solomon.
Three starters are back on the offensive line, which looks exceptionally solid for 2006.
The defensive line had holes in it at the start of the season but got much better as the season progressed. Both ends and tackles gained a whole lot of practical knowledge in 2005. Junior DE Kenny Iwebema sacked 7 last season, expect the same and more this year.
Adam Shada did not start at corner, but he had 3 interceptions during limited playing time. He’s back with Charles Godfrey opposite him. The safety positions are manned by two seniors and are secure.
This team should excel in 2006 and land a spot in its fifth bowl game in five years. Look for a lot of offense and much better “D.” Games that can go either way include Michigan and Wisconsin. If they win those and somehow manage to beat Ohio State, they’ll be 12 - 0.
