Coach: Mark Right (6th year at Georgia)
Team Name: Bulldogs
2005 Overall Record: 10-2
2005 SEC Conference Record 6-2
Returning Starters: 9
Two SEC titles, including last season’s, in four years have defined the first half-decade of coach Mark Richt’s tenure. But that was with two formidable QBs. This season, that job is up for grabs. Still, the Bulldogs will be a force with which to be reckoned.
The only QB with experience is Joe Tereshinski, who threw 49 passes last season. Whoever the signal caller is he’ll have a backfield bulging with experienced runners, including Thomas Brown (736 YDS, 5.0 YDS/Carry, 4 TDs), Danny Ware (492 YDS, 4.9 YDS/Carry, 1 TD) and Kregg Lumpkin (335 YDS, 5.1 YDS/Carry, 3 TDS). Receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, possessing the surest hands in the conference, is back, but he needs help to open up the field.
The Georgia “D” was outstanding on pass coverage in 2005 and overall it was miserly, allowing 16.4 PPG. Quentin Moses (11.5 sacks) leads the front line, however, there are plenty of question marks on the line, in the linebacking corps and in the secondary. There’s talent but will it gel?
The Bulldogs will have their work cutout for them when they meet Florida and Auburn, both near the end of the season. Those were the only two teams to beat Georgia last year. The Dawgs will be in contention for the SEC title and those two games may decide their fate.
