Coach: Randy Edsall (8th year at Connecticut)
Team Name: Huskies
2005 Overall Record: 5-6
2005 Big East Conference Record 2-5
Returning Starters: 14
Despite many injuries, the Huskies managed to field a defense that was ranked seventh overall in the nation. Offense was another story. Quarterback Matt Bonislawski (82 COMP, 162 ATT, 836 YDS, 6 TDs, 7 INTS) spent much of the season sidelined. Although he’s healthy now, the athletic sophomore D.J. Hernandez is slotted to start.
At tailback, senior Terry Caulley is hoping to stay healthy and rush for a 1,000-plus yards. Although the receiving corps looks thin, senior tight end Dan Murray will be a go-to guy.
Four linemen are back and that should certainly help upfront. This team needs to score more than 24.7 PPG, which means more from the front four.
The defense returns WLB Danny Lasanah (79 tackles, 3 sacks) and DE Dan Davis (3 sacks). With Davis, tackle Rhema Fuller should provide a solid foundation for the line. To be competitive, they need to stop the run this year, something they could not do in 2005.
Overall, the secondary looks strong with freshman standout Darius Butler, who grabbed 4 interceptions his first season, primed to work his mischief at cornerback. At safety, M.J. Estep and Marvin Taylor are dependable.
To get beyond 5-6, the Huskies must be able to generate points. They play Wake Forest, Indiana and Navy in September. Winning one of those contests and a victory over South Florida will say a lot about this team’s progress in 2006.
