Coach: Bronco Mendenhall (2nd year at BYU)
Team Name: Cougars
2005 Overall Record: 6-5
2005 WAC Record 5-3
Returning Starters: 14
Last year, senior quarterback John Beck (331 COMP, 513 ATT, 3,709 YDS, 27 TDs, 13 INTS) and the offense put an average of 33 PPG on the board, but the defense gave up 29.3 PPG. For this team to step up, the defense must start doing its job.
Beck completed 64.5% of his passes, including 63 to tight end Johnny Harline (63 REC, 853 YDS, 5 TDs). Harline is big and fast; he had 3 games at 100-plus yards in 2005. This team is rich in ball catchers that can run specific routes for the accurate Beck.
Senior RB Curtis Brown (210 CARR, 1,123 YDS, 14 TDs) was a big-time player last season. In addition to his on-ground production, he caught 53 passes.
The offensive line, which played great in 2005, is even better this season. They’ll give Beck and company the time and room they’ll need to score points.
On defense, the frontline is certainly a concern and the linebacking corps will look to senior Cameron Jensen (84 tackles) for leadership. The secondary, which had problems last season, returns both corners. The frontline must help the secondary by putting more pressure on quarterbacks.
Swing games include away contests against Arizona, Boston College and Utah. They could win or lose them all. TCU is almost a sure loss. Once again, a bowl bid is not impossible.
