Coach: Chris Peterson (1st year at Boise State)
Team Name: Broncos
2005 Overall Record: 9-3
2005 WAC Record 7-1
Returning Starters: 18
To say that QB Jared Zabransky (202 COMP, 342 ATT, 2,562 YDS) had an off-season in 2005 would be an understatement. Along with connecting for 18 touchdowns, he threw 16 interceptions. Look for him to go back to the run and take command of the field like he did in 2004.
The Broncos have a solid frontline and an experienced receiving corps. But the receivers have to be more productive. The tough offensive line bodes well for the team, as does the fact that they have a running game that’s 4-deep. Sophomore RB Ian Johnson (119 CARR, 663 YDS, 4 TDs) averaged 5.6 yards per carry and will lead the attack.
The Broncos return a total of 15 starters, including 8 on defense. MLB Korey Hall, a senior, made 106 tackles last year and senior SLB Colt Brooks had 6 sacks. Together, they are the most potent linebacking tandem in the conference. The secondary returns four starters, including safety Marty Tadmen (5 interceptions), and is deep, while the defensive frontline, led by senior Andrew Browning, should be tough.
Last year, Boise State lost to Boston College 21- 27 in the MPC Computers Bowl after a solid season. This year, with a refocused quarterback, they should be even better, but they will be tested by Utah and Fresno State. Another bowl bid should be in this team’s future in 2006.
