2005 Phoenix Coyotes Hockey Season Preview

Brett Hull has played 18 NHL seasons at right wing where he’s scored 741 goals placing him third on the all-time list. Only Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe have put the puck in the net more often. Now the hockey legend is in Phoenix and the home team is hoping he’ll play his typical 80 to 82 game season. That means he’ll accumulate somewhere between 60 and 80 points, matching the stamina and output of Phoenix’s nine-year veteran winger Shane Doan.

Like Hull venter and free agent Mike Ricci is another new and exciting addition to the Coyotes. Over the past three years the 14-year veteran has seen his playing time and output decrease due to back and shoulder injuries. Although it’s doubtful he’ll be able to score 27 goals and make 51 assists like he did for Quebec in 1992-03, it would be a big boost for Phoenix if he can recreate 2001-02 totals when he scored 53 points.

Finally, there are the net blocking chores. In goal Brian Broucher returns for his third season with the Coyotes where he has a 2.89 GAA and a .900 save percentage. The new kid in town with net duties is not a kid but 15-year veteran Curtis Joseph, who in 2003-04 missed 28 games due to groin and ankle injuries. Who will be starting in the crease is anyone’s guess, but whoever does they’ll have to post lower numbers when it comes to goals against and higher numbers for save percentages.

With hard work and dogged determination the Phoenix team may finish in the top eight of the Western conference, which means they’ll be playoff bound in 2005-06.
