The Blue Jays aim for a sweep of their AL East rivals after slamming eight home runs on Saturday afternoon.

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays

Tampa Bay has lost a season-worst four games in a row and is facing being swept for the first time since May 24-26.  The Rays fell 17-11 in Saturday’s defeat, but manager Joe Maddon found some positive things to take away from the loss.  “I really love the way we stayed with it all the way through,” he said.  “I really appreciated our guys’ effort today.”  Despite dropping the first two games of this series, the club still has 33-20 record on the road (+960), which is the best mark in baseball.  Tampa is also a solid 21-12 during the day (+600) and the total is 14-18 O/U in those contests.  The Rays are 6-5 on the season against the Blue Jays and 2-3 at the Rogers Centre.

Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez’s pursuit of 600 home runs is starting to wear on his teammates.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto has captured the first two games of this series and the offense has managed to generate eight runs in each contest.  “We’re doing a good job offensively,” Jose Bautista said.  “We’re coming up with big hits when we need them and solo shots here and there.”  He hit his MLB-best 33rd home run last night in the ninth inning, as the Blue Jays have hit 23 of their 167 home runs during their current 8-3 stretch.  The pitching staff has held its own recently, ranking second in the American League with a 3.05 ERA since the All-Star break.  The team is now 5-3 against the Yankees this season and have won eight of their last 13 meetings dating back to last year.  Toronto stands at 22-16 versus division opponents (+1,010) and the total is 17-20 O/U in those contests.

The Yankees open this three-game series against the Blue Jays with just a game lead in the AL East division.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto dropped its final two games of a series against Cleveland over the weekend and now turn their focus to the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox in the next three series.  The Blue Jays are 3-3 against the Yankees this season, as the teams have 12 more meetings in 2010.  The club is 12-0 against the Baltimore Orioles this season, but are 8-16 against the rest of the American League East division.  “We’re going to go through some tough times with it,” said manager Cito Gaston of the AL East.  “People talk about being the West or being in the Central, but you’ve still got to pass through the East to get where you need to go.”  The Blue Jays are 83-97 against the division over the last three years (-1,370) and the total is 81-94 O/U in those meetings.

The Blue Jays look to finish the month with the most home runs in baseball and pick up a fifth-straight victory on their current homestand.

Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays

Cleveland has lost six of seven games and the starting rotation has given up 16 runs over 10 innings during a current three-game skid.  The Indians’ offense managed to collect just five hits, while allowing a six-run fourth inning in a 8-1 loss to the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre last night.  “I think the night belonged to Shaun Marcum,” said manager Manny Acta.  “He was fantastic.”  Today’s game will be the second of a seven-game road trip that has the club traveling to Toronto and Boston.  The Tribe is 19-34 in road games this year (-530) and the total is 24-26 O/U in those contests.  Cleveland is also 12-21 against the AL East division, while having a winning 20-18 mark against their own division.  The club has been very successful playing on Saturdays, notching a 10-7 record (+660).

The Blue Jays look to snap a long losing streak against today’s opponent at the Rogers Centre.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays

Boston continues a seven-day, six-game road trip with the second of three games, after clobbering the Toronto Blue Jays 14-3 at the Rogers Centre.  The team now comes in carrying a 6-1 series advantage, after compiling an 11-7 series win in 2009.  The Red Sox have now won seven straight games at the venue and broke a four-game losing streak in which the team scored just 12 runs.  “We kind of needed that,” said manager Terry Francona.  At 50-36, the club is tied for the fourth-best record in baseball, behind only the Yankees, Rays and Braves.  The Red Sox hope to improve upon their 7-12 daytime record this year (-870), as the team is 7-3 on artificial turf (+480).  The team hasn’t always been successful on the face stuff, going 25-33 the last three years (-880).

The Blue Jays are easily the best home underdog on Tuesday’s MLB card.

Minnesota Twins at Toronto Blue Jays

Minnesota gets no break in traveling up north for a series against the Toronto Blue Jays, with the club carrying a disappointing 8-12 mark against the AL East division.  The Twins also currently stand at 18-21 on the road this season (-210) and have dropped 13 of their last 19 away from Target Field.  Offensively, the lineup will be led by the All-Star combination of catcher Joe Mauer and first baseman Justin Morneau.  Mauer is hitting .388 in his last 14 games against the Blue Jays, while Morneau is a sizzling .354 with seven home runs and 26 RBIs in his last 25 meetings.  Minnesota is an even 1-1 on artificial turf this season – the surface of the team’s old home the Metrodome.

The Bronx Bombers have been known to dominate opponents on Sundays at Yankee Stadium.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto suffered one of its worst defeats of the year on Saturday afternoon, giving up an 11-run third inning to ultimately fall 11-3 at Yankee Stadium.  The 11 runs for the Yankees equaled a franchise-record for the most runs the Blue Jays have surrendered in a single inning.  “Everything happened in that inning that you could imagine,” manager Cito Gaston said.  Overall, the Jays have won six of their last 10 contests against the Yankees.  Toronto is now 8-12 at Yankee Stadium dating back to the 2008 season, with an even 4-4 mark the last eight meetings.  The team’s current road trip has been a forgettable one, being outscored 49-23 in nine games.  Toronto has lost both games as a road underdog of +175 to +200 in 2010, while posting a 3-11 record in this spot the past three years (-530).

The Yankees veteran starter is seemingly pitching for a spot on the All-Star roster and leading his team to victory.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto picked up a 6-1 extra-innings victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The Blue Jays streak of games without a home run was pushed to five games, as the team leads the majors with 115 home runs.  The six-run outburst was a relief to fans based on the team scoring just 1.8 runs per game during its five-game losing streak. Toronto’s pitching staff has been doing a tremendous job against the league’s second-best offense this year, posting a 1.55 ERA in four games against the Bronx Bombers.  A victory in game two of this series will be hard to come by, with the team producing a 7-13 record against left-handed starters (-560).  These struggles are nothing new due to the club’s 49-64 mark against southpaws the last three years (-2,020).

Now that the first series of the season is out of the way in baseball, we have our first chance to look at what we have seen so far and which players have done things that we like. On guy who really jumps out on that front is Vernon Wells. The Toronto slugger is talented – MVP talented – but there is a disconnect somewhere near where his brain meets his body, and he has never really been able to capitalize on what he is capable of. So far this year, though, he’s on fire – four home runs in three games, and in just 10 at-bats he has six hits and seven RBIs. With guys like Adam Lind and Travis Snyder in town Wells doesn’t have to be the only big bat for the Jays, and expectations aren’t very high for the team, so maybe he’s finally in a situation where he can have the massive year he is capable of. He’ll be worth watching.

Olympic Bet of the Day – Alright, enough fooling around – it’s time to do some winning. Like my fellow Canadians I am underperforming so far during these Olympics, but like my Canadians I plan to close strong. We’re going to start this road back to redemption with a nice, hopefully winning, five event parlay. It will include: Russia (+138) to win women’s biathlon relay, Sven Kramer (-510) to win the men’s 10,000m speedskating, Didier Cuche (-165) to beat Bode Miller in the giant slalom, Canada (-4.5  -114) over Germany in hockey, and Switzerland (-1  +110) over Belarus in hockey. That will pay $1702 if and when it wins.
