Big East Football
Pittsburgh is one of the co-favorites to win the Big East Conference and our pick to do so
The Big East will be very competitive this season as 6 of the 8 teams have a chance of winning the conference. Only Syracuse and Louisville don’t really have a shot at the title. The problem with such a competitive league is that the teams will beat up on each other, making it possible that the conference champ might have 2 or 3 losses at the end of the season. Here is a look at each of the individual teams. College football odds to win the Big East conference title are from Bodog and listed in parentheses.

Something is very rotten in Pittsburgh. There is really no way to explain how the Steelers managed to lose to the Browns last night. The stats are just staggering. They lost to a team that has a quarterback who completed six of 19 passes for 90 yards. The Browns’ leading rusher was Josh Cribbs – a wide receiver. Cribbs only had 87 yards, but he outgained the entire Steelers team by 12 yards. Big Ben was sacked eight times. This was as bad as a legitimate team can possibly play. The offensive line was offensive, the defense didn’t care, receivers were quitting on routes – absolutely nothing went well. The defending Super Bowl champs have now dropped five in a row, and you really have to wonder what Mike Tomlin is going to do about this, and maybe even f he is going to survive it. Injuries – Troy Polamalu chief among them – are a big part of the story, but that’s not an excuse. It could be an excuse for not winning the division, but it’s not an excuse for a five game slide and a loss to the freaking Browns. Now they have nine days to sit and stew in their own misery before their next game. It will be very interesting to watch what goes on in Pittsburgh over the next few weeks.

I am clearly a curse of death for any college basketball team. Without a word of exaggeration, my plan for tonight was sit down and write a piece about Syracuse basketball. With a win tonight over Cleveland State they would be 10-0 for the first time in a long time, and their combination of talent, outstanding coaching and expectations tempered by a tough conference set them up very well as a sleeper in my book. It was going to be good. But then I fired up my computer, looked at the scoreboard, and felt my heart sink. See, Syracuse was favored by 10.5 at home over Cleveland State, but they forgot to show up and lost to a late three pointer. That’s yet another team to add to the list of teams that flounder and fall as soon as I jump on the bandwagon. The loss could be worse for Syracuse, I guess – Cleveland State was only 6-4 coming into the game, but they had been well tested, with games against teams like West Virginia, Butler, Kansas State and Washington under their belts. They were a perfect 0-4 against that group, though, so there really wasn’t an excuse. I obviously don’t think that this is reason enough to write of Syracuse, but they have a bit to prove before I believe in them again.
